See the selection method in context

One adviser gives a polished retirement presentation but a vague fee answer. The other provides a plainer proposal with a complete scope, dollar estimate and conflict explanation. The comparison rewards verifiable service evidence rather than meeting style.

Create one decision brief

Write household facts, assets involved, decisions due, desired deliverables and constraints without unnecessary sensitive data. Send the same brief to both candidates. If they solve different problems, first decide which scope is appropriate before comparing price or presentation. Next step: Score comparable adviser evidence.

Build an evidence table

For each candidate, record registry results, services, responsible person, first-year cost, later cost, product expenses, conflicts, custodian and review cadence. Link each entry to a disclosure, agreement or written answer. Treat missing evidence as unresolved rather than filling the gap with an impression. Next step: Use the same interview questions.

Use stop conditions before scores

An identity mismatch, missing required authority, pressure to transfer quickly or request for unsafe payment access should stop the process regardless of a high score elsewhere. For remaining candidates, weight the factors that matter to the assignment and keep the reasons for the final choice. Next step: Review the final agreement.

Questions before you hire

Should investment performance decide?

Past or hypothetical performance does not replace a review of process, cost, risk and fit. Be cautious of selective or unsupported claims.

How many advisers should I interview?

There is no required number. Compare enough qualified options to understand meaningful differences without collecting proposals you cannot assess carefully.
