What the conversation must establish
Question a disability insurance agent about benefit definitions, exclusions, waiting periods, renewability and claims support.
Take these prompts into the meeting
- Describe real occupational duties
- Confirm covered income
- Compare disability definitions
- List exclusions and limitations
- Check renewability language
- Price each rider separately
Make occupation and income specific
Describe your actual duties, not just a job title, and ask how the contract treats inability to perform them. Confirm eligible income, benefit percentage, maximum benefit and documentation requirements. A policy may distinguish own occupation, any occupation, partial disability and residual income loss. Next step: Verify the insurance agent's authority.
Read the time and exclusion rules
Record the elimination period before benefits begin, maximum benefit period, pre-existing-condition language, mental or nervous limitation, and exclusions relevant to the offered contract. Ask whether benefits coordinate with employer coverage, government programmes or other policies. Next step: Evaluate exclusions and optional riders.
Ask what can change
Identify whether the policy is non-cancellable, guaranteed renewable or subject to class-wide premium changes, using the contract's exact terms. Review optional riders one by one. For each rider, ask what event triggers it, what it changes and how much premium it adds. Next step: Organise income and existing coverage.
Turn an answer into evidence
A surgeon receives two similar benefit quotes. One definition changes from own occupation to any reasonable occupation after a period; the other retains a stronger occupational definition but costs more. Comparing only monthly benefit would hide the contract difference most relevant to the surgeon's risk.

Follow-up questions
Is employer disability coverage enough?
It may be valuable but can have benefit caps, tax treatment, portability and definition limits. Obtain the plan document and compare it with your income need.
What is an elimination period?
It is the contractually defined waiting period before eligible benefits begin. Check how days are counted and plan cash reserves for that gap.
