Start with the legal firm

Search the firm in Investment Adviser Public Disclosure and open its Form ADV information. The filing identifies registration status and relevant jurisdictions. Do not assume that federal registration is a quality ranking or that state registration means a smaller standard of care. Next step: Interpret the adviser's detailed filing.

Check the individual too

Find the investment adviser representative or other professional record connected with the firm. Match office, employment and identifiers and read disclosure events. A firm filing cannot answer every question about the person who will serve the account. Next step: Compare relationship summaries.

Use status as the beginning of due diligence

Registration does not mean a regulator has approved ability, recommendations or returns. Read Form CRS and Form ADV, compare fees and services, investigate disclosures and verify the relationship again immediately before signing or transferring assets. Next step: Keep registration separate from titles.

A fair comparison in practice

A consumer cannot find an adviser on an SEC-only list and assumes the person is unregistered. IAPD shows the firm and representative through state registration information. The consumer then checks the correct filings instead of treating regulator level as a quality score.

Build your comparison record

  • Search the firm's legal name
  • Open Form ADV information
  • Note regulator and jurisdictions
  • Search the individual record
  • Read all disclosure details
  • Recheck before engagement

Questions that settle the choice

Is an SEC-registered adviser safer?

Registration level is not a safety or quality rating. Conduct the same service, fee, conflict and disciplinary review.

Why might a person appear in BrokerCheck too?

Some professionals have brokerage and advisory roles. Determine which firm, service and account capacity apply to your proposal.

Choose on evidence, not labels

  • Search the firm's legal name
  • Open Form ADV information
  • Note regulator and jurisdictions
  • Search the individual record
