The verification standard
Verify a CFP professional's certification status, disciplinary history and identity, then check legal registration separately.
Run the checks in order
Your progress is stored only in this browser.
Match the person, not the marketing profile
Ask for the professional's full legal name, business location and firm. Search the official CFP Board verification record and resolve similar names or missing results. Save the date and status because certification can change after a website or printed biography is published. Next step: Run the full adviser background check.
Read what the certification establishes
Review CFP Board's current certification, continuing education, ethics and enforcement information. The credential signals completion of its standards; it does not guarantee fit, performance or a clean record in every other system. Read any public disciplinary information in context. Next step: Understand adviser registration systems.
Check authority for the proposed work
A certification is not an investment adviser, broker or insurance licence. Search IAPD or BrokerCheck for securities-related work and the state insurance department for insurance authority. Compare the legal person, firm, service, fee and complaint route before hiring. Next step: Interpret titles and credentials.

What a complete verification record looks like
A candidate's profile displays CFP marks. The client finds a current certification record under the legal name, then uses the listed firm and CRD number to review registration and disclosures in Investor.gov. Both records match before the service proposal is considered.
Verification questions
Does CFP certification mean the person is a fiduciary?
CFP professionals are subject to the certifying body's standards, but you should still ask which legal capacity and standard apply to every proposed service and account.
What if the person does not appear?
Check spelling and identity, then ask the person for clarification. Do not rely on the credential claim until the issuing body confirms it.
